It all started when…
Sikycha, 5 years old, wanted to help her mother make sweets. She accidently fell into the boiling pot of oil. When she fell into the oil, she received burns on 33% of her body. With burns so significant, her chance of survival was only 20%. The 12 hour bus ride she took with her grandmother to the Nepal Cleft and Burn center was unimaginably painful for the little girl. The distance they had to travel was also time lost in her treatment and made her survival chance even more slim. She required 6 surgeries including multiple skin grafts. Her life was saved by her father’s skin donation, which was harvested at the hospital and saved through our skin bank. The cost to save her life was merely $1,500 for 6 surgeries. In the US, those surgeries would have cost upwards of $50,000.
